Almost everyone has vinegar in their house. Vinegar is a great product for many things around your house. Whenever vinegar is called for, use distilled white vinegar. When other types are called for, the specific types are noted.
1.Add one 1/2 cup vinegar to an empty dishwasher and run rinse cycle. This will open up any clogs in the dishwasher drain lines, and deodorize.
2. Place a glass measuring cup with one cup water and 1/4 cup vinegar inside microwave. Boil for 3 minutes, then remove measuring cup and wipe inside of oven with a damp cloth.
3. The vents of your oven hood should be “de-greased” twice a year. Wipe vents with a sponge and undiluted vinegar, or remove vents and soak them for 15 minutes in 1 cup vinegar and 3 cups water.
4. To deodorize the rubber seal on garbage disposals, remove seal and let it soak in vinegar for one hour.
5. Pour vinegar into toilet and let sit for 30 minutes. Sprinkle baking soda on a toilet bowl brush and scour any remaining stained areas. Flush.
6. Remove crayon stains from carpet or any other fabric or surface by scrubbing area with a toothbrush dipped in vinegar.
7. Add a cup of plain vinegar to a gallon bucket of water, mop onto hardwood floors (don’t saturate). No need to rinse. This helps remove grease buildup and keeps them shiny.
8. Add 8 ounces apple cider vinegar to a bathtub of warm water to relieve itchy skin and achy muscles. Soak in tub for at least 15 minutes.
9. Massage full strength vinegar into your scalp several times a week before shampooing. This helps control dandruff.
10. Soak fingertips for 1 minute in 2 teaspoons vinegar and 1/2 cup warm water before applying nail polish. This makes your polish last longer.
11. Use 1 teaspoon per 8 ounces of water to gargle for sore throats.
12. Spray vinegar near sinks and thresholds to stop ants from getting into your house. Try to find the point of entrance and wipe these areas with vinegar.
13. If you run out of buttermilk , stir 1 tablespoon vinegar into 1 cup whole milk, and let stand for a few minutes. Use just like buttermilk.
14. Vinegar can be used as a substitution for lemon or lime juice. Use 1/2 teaspoon vinegar for each teaspoon of lemon or lime.
15. Use vinegar mixed with cornstarch to make a paste. Apply paste to a bee sting or bug bite, and let it dry.
Do you have any other uses for vinegar?

Nice list! I wash my hair with vinegar. It’s also great with baking soda for unclogging drains: Pack about 1/2 cup of baking soda down into the drain. Pour a couple tablespoons of vinegar on it. Wait til it stops fizzing, then do it again. The fizzing action helps to lift gunk out of the drain.

Great ideas!!
I use it to clean my jewelry – both fancy and costume 🙂 I’ve used to to unclog drains, like Becca suggests, as well as to make a foaming cleaner w/ baking soda for toilets 🙂

Cheap white vinegar is great for de-rusting tools. Submerge the steel tool (like a rusty old axe head) in vinegar, check it after a day or so (clean with a bristle brush and rinse well), and put it back in the same vinegar if there is still some rust remaining. Repeat until satisfactory, then rinse well, dry, and apply oil.
Old files (the kind that abrade metal and wood) can be re-sharpened somewhat for extra life by soaking them overnight in vinegar. Again, clean and dry well afterwards.

Hello from St. Louie! Stopping in from SITS. Loved these! My good friend’s answer to whatever ails you is vinegar. She’s like the Dad on “My Fat Greek Wedding” who puts Windex on everything. 😉

I had no idea that could help. My problem would be I do not like the taste of vinegar. That would be hard for me to do! LOL!

Great tips! I needed a bunch of those! I have the Scuba (robot mop like Roomba robot vacuum) and we only use vinegar and water in it to clean the floors. I love it because the floors get cleaned automatically while I am at work and I don’t have to worry about my son crawling around on chemicals.
Happy SITS Day!

I put vinegar into my Downy ball and throw it in the washing machine with my clothes. It is great for deodorizing them and they don’t ever smell like vinegar. Also, if you happen to leave your clothes in the washer too long and they have started to smell musty, you can pour a cup of vinegar in and re-run the rinse cycle. They come out smelling fresh again!
I also love using vinegar for cleaning. I give my kids a rag soaked with vinegar and warm water and they scrub my cabinets without me worrying about chemicals!!

Great info! My coffee pot directs me to clean it diluted 1:3 ratio with vinegar to water. Removes calcium buildup. Happy SITS day!

Wow! Crayon stains…. wonder if this would work for crayon “stains” that got onto clothing from apparently being mixed with our dirty clothes in the basket before washing and drying?! Worth a shot… I hope it will work. 🙂

These are great! I have a question about the dishwasher one, though – do I put the vinegar in the soap compartment? or just like out in the open in the washer? Feeling a bit dumb on this one…
Tanya says
That is not a dumb question. I should of specified. You just pour it into the bottom of your dishwasher and run a normal cycle.
