Today I have Edna Thomson joining me from Renovators Ealing. She is going to show us how to bring color into your home.
Have you ever seen a movie, a magazine, or something on the Internet that shows a house that is full of colors, and it looks very good so you think that professionals must have decorated it? Well, not necessarily. Everyone can bring as much and as many different colors into their home as they wish. It is not the easiest task, because you do not want to end up with so many colors that it just looks crazy and tacky.
The first thing you have to do before making your home more colorful is to decide which colors for which room you are going to use. And not only the color combinations but also the meanings and senses that colors bring. For example the warm colors – red, yellow, orange are more lively and happy and bring a sense of joy and can be used for rooms like the kitchen or the living room. Whereas the cool colors – blue, green, violet bring a sense of peace and calm, soothing, and they would be perfect for your bedroom or your bathroom and even the hallways.
Use the paint to paint something on your walls that is missing from the room. Like a headboard, if your bed doesn’t have one. Or if you can draw just use it to draw anything you want on your walls. Birds, animals, flowers. If you don’t think you can do that or if it’s too much of a commitment and time-consuming, just pick out some nice new paintings that match your new color combination and hang them up. This is what they are saying from Renovators Ealing.
Take some time and go through all your old photos that you have in a photo albums or even in a box. Pick out some funny ones, and hang them on your walls. Be creative, do collages, buy interesting, funny or original frames to put them in.
But of course if you are going to make your house colorful you cannot stop with the walls. Take a look at your furniture. If you have wooden chairs in your kitchen, why not paint them in colors to match your new walls. And the kitchen cabinet doors, bring them into the color frenzy. Paint your bookshelves, or any other piece of furniture that needs a facelift.
Once you are done with painting, think about your soft furniture. Your couch and armchairs could use some new and joyful colors. Go out and buy some covers for them. This time think about adding some elements and figures to the colors. Why not get something with flowers or stripes, or any shape that tickles your fancy and matches the combination of colors in the room.
Add decorative pillows to your couch and armchairs, if you don’t have any, or if you do get some cases in the proper colors. This might be the easiest and cheapest thing you can do to aid your goal and you can even make them yourself.
Of course the one thing that will always help no matter what colors your rooms are, are flowers of any kind. Potted plants, or an arrangement in a vase. Put them on your window sills, on the tables and night stands. Even flowers that do not have any colorful leaves, the green plants are a great decoration and a way to bring color and freshness to your home.
Find new curtains in complementary colors for your room. Find some that have some interesting ornaments or shapes on them, or even ones that match the figures on your pillows. Get some new lamps, or just lampshades to change things up and add to your new looking rooms.
It is very easy and fun to bring colors into your home, once you have decided what colors you want. Include the whole family in the process, consider suggestions and options, once you agree on the colors get to work and make your home even more joyful.

Great ideas! I have several different pillow covers and it allows me to change out my pillows seasonally when I change out my decor. I love bright primary colors on walls and furniture, but oddly enough I don’t really decorate with them. I mean, I love splashy reds and vibrant greens and yellows and blues all together when I see them in other people’s homes, but I haven’t done that in my own home yet (not altogether).
I think I am going to have to do that at some point, lol! Be bold! 🙂
