I wanted to share with you a little piece of my home where I spend a great deal of time. Even with a chronic illness, I love to decorate when I have the energy. Hopefully my post will inspire you in making your home a refuge. I’ve loved decorating since I was in high school. Whenever I would visit friends I was always looking at their homes and thinking of what I liked about it. I remember it didn’t matter to me as much how it was decorated, but if it made me feel at home.
My parents divorced when I was ten and we moved around a lot during my childhood. I was always envious of my friends who were in their homes since birth. My grandparents homes were also a place of refuge for me. My mom’s parents had lived in their home since my mom was five. It was the one constant in my life and I loved visiting that house, especially during the holidays with all of my cousins.
I love this smiling scarecrow! He’s got weighted feet to make him stand up. I got it at Jo-Anne fabrics a few years ago. I love decorating for fall with mums! I’m sure you can find things around your home to bring outside.
This is my quiet place which is in a corner of my bedroom. I like to sit here and read or have my quiet time. Sometimes when I’m feeling discouraged that I don’t have the energy to go anywhere, I look out my window and I can see trees and hills. Is there a place in your home where you can create a little corner for peace and quiet? Making your home a refuge is so important.
This is Toby my one eye wonder. He is a nine year old toy poodle who has been through a lot, but still manages to keep me company and my spirits lifted. A year ago he had to have an eye removed due to a cataract and an infection. He’s had other medical issues as well. We make a great pair! He does quite well with one eye though. I love this little guy!
This is my kitchen window overlooking my back yard. I got the fake fern and pot from IKEA and the adorable red mugs from my mom for Christmas. They were hand painted by women in a third world country. I would of never thought to put mugs in my window, but I love how the color pops! I had always wanted a window in my kitchen and our new house had one! I love looking out at the mountains while doing dishes.
You can see my bookshelf transformation here.
Here is a peek into my craft room redo. I don’t spend as much time as I’d like in it, but I’m planning on making an effort to get in there more. I find it relaxing and therapeutic. What are some of the things you enjoy doing? Do you have a place where you could set up a table with a few organizing items to keep your things?
I love my bathroom. I have a big soaking tub that I used quite often. It’s one of the things I look forward to at the end of the day. I usually put a little Epsom salt and lavender in my bath water. I love how this shell wreath turned out. I have a beach themed bathroom, so it fit just perfectly! Your bathroom doesn’t have to be fancy, just a place where you can relax at the end of the day. Do you have some big comfy towels or a robe? Simple things like that can really make a difference!
Making your home a refuge doesn’t have to involve a lot of money or time. Have a friend come over and help you put something together. How will you make your home inviting? I would love to hear from you!
